Preventative Canker Sores Treatment

Because there is no definitive cure for them, most canker sores treatment is either palliative (reducing pain) or preventative.  Some of the preventative home canker sore remedies are:

  • Check your toothpaste.  Many commercial toothpastes have changed from glycerine to sodium lauryl sulfate (also known as SLS), which can be a skin irritant for some people.  If yours contains SLS, try using a non-SLS toothpaste such as Sensodyne or something similar.
  • Sometimes canker sores are caused by nutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin B12, iron, or folic acid.  The only way to know this is really to have a blood test administered by your doctor, so if you’re getting canker sores more than a few times a year, it might be worth it to get tested. 
  • Things that break the mucous membrane covering the inside of the mouth can also make you more susceptible to canker sores.  New dental braces, brushing your teeth too hard (or even with bristles that are too stiff), or even just eating “sharp” foods like potato chips and pretzels can be the snowball that starts the avalanche for your mouth.  Your dentists should be able to help you pinpoint whether or not physical trauma to the mouth is what causes canker sores in your case.
  • Relax.  Some studies have shown a link between canker sores and stress, so if you tend to break out around exam time, it might be time to take five.  Try praying or meditating; go for a walk in the park; or do whatever you need to do to get all that anxiety out. 

Unfortunately, if you’ve already got a canker sore, it’s too late for prevention.  But at least this way, you know what canker sores treatment to try so you don’t get any more.
