Canker Sore Relief
Quick Canker Sore Relief
In need of some quick canker sore relief? There’s good news, and bad news.
First, the good news. There are a truckload of canker sore treatment options available today, from the low-budget salt-water mouth rinse (about 1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) to the more experimental drugs on the market like Tagamet or Debacterol. A lot of people use topical gels or pastes as a way of alleviating the pain. These tend to be more effective than mouthwashes or orally administered medications at reducing pain because they can be applied directly to the canker sore. Lidocaine and Orabase two of the most common of these. Then there are the alternative medicine approaches—these can range from placing a black tea bag on the canker sore, to more practical ideas such as avoiding spicy food and citrus fruits when you have a canker sore. The best alt-medicine canker sore remedy is probably for people who also have a vitamin B12 deficiency, which can cause recurring canker sores. Vitamin supplements may help reduce the frequency of canker sores in their case. The other alt-medicine approach that has promise is the use of licorice extract, known technically as Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL). One study involving the use of a DGL mouthwash showed that 75% of the participants had been completely healed of their canker sore at the end of three days.
And now, the not-so-good news. Truth is, there really isn’t a cure for canker sores. Most treatment is palliative, not curative. But the best canker sore relief is time: most people heal completely within a couple of weeks.
